Attending an Interstate Funeral

COVID-19 continues to make the news and the latest update, is the NSW-VIC border closure. But how does this affect funerals?

Travelling interstate is once again closed.
Travelling interstate is once again closed.

For many of us, this will not be a big change. But for those that were planning on seeing a loved ones funeral, it can be devastating. People that attended a service during the original lock-down will know what to expect but for everyone else, it can be a very challenging time.

Webcasting

For anyone in Victoria that was planning on attending a H.Parsons Funeral Service, there are a couple of options. Regardless of where the service is being held (though some restrictions may apply), the family is able to organize free webcasting of the service. This can be done in our chapels, in a church or other location.

Zoom Wall

Should the service be held in our Wollongong Chapel, then there is also the option of using our Zoom Wall. This lets you join live over Zoom. You can talk to others in the chapel and you can see others attending. Before, after and during the service, your live feed will be shown in the chapel as well. The Zoom Wall is the closest that you can come to physically attending the funeral service, while still being in Victoria.

The family of the deceased is able to organize the Zoom Wall with one of our Funeral Directors. Once we have set up the Zoom Wall, we are able to share the link to join via email, social media and also via Funeral Announcement.com.au.

The Future

For those that cannot cross the border, even if you can view the service online, there is no substitute for physically attending a service. This border closure should not last forever. Once it is lifted, the chance will come to visit the family and friends that were at the service. Perhaps you can visit the persons memorial, share memories over a meal or just reconnect.

Eventually though, life will return to normal. In the meantime, it’s important that we do as much as we can to adapt to our current situation. Stay resilient and stay strong.
